Gen. Longstreet-Piedmont Hotel Museum's 10/11 grand re-opening
Hello, SCV camp commanders and adjutant! The Longstreet Society invites you and all your camp members, families, and friends to join us for two big events this fall. First, the James Longstreet Museum at the Piedmont Hotel will have its grand re-opening on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, from 10 to 2 at 827 Maple Street near downtown Gainesville. For the last few months, the museum has undergone a major renovation so that it will resemble what it looked like when General James Longstreet and his family ran it as late 19th century Victorian Era hotel from 1876 to 1895. A truly massive transformation of the museum has taken place and we at the Longstreet Society are so excited to soon show it off to everyone. The museum's doors will re-open at 10:00 on Saturday, 10/11, and everyone is welcome to tour the museum at will. Refreshments will be available, and at 11:00, the leaders of the renovation, Jeff and Gayla Pierce, will give a presentation on how they oversaw the museum's transformation. As always, admission to the museum is FREE. We'd love for all of you and your families and friends to join us for this really special and fun celebration of the wonderful results of so much hard work. Then, on the weekend of NOVEMBER 7-9, we will have our annual Longstreet Society seminar. We're very excited that, for the first time in a very long time, we're holding this year's seminar in Gainesville. For a detailed schedule of all the activities planned, please read the attached file. In addition to four speakers discussing General Longstreet's spiritual journey, military prowess, political evolution (my topic), and the many famous and fascinating figures to stay at the Piedmont Hotel, we will tour all the local Longstreet sites, including the general's last home which he shared with his amazing second wife, Helen Dortch Longstreet. We will even get to explore the home's recently renovated and heretofore unavailable basement where Gainesville's first Catholic mass was held. To register for the 11/7-9 seminar, please go to www.longstreetsociety.org. And this year's seminar registration fee has been cut by one-third from last year's fee! So please consider joining us for a most educational and enjoyable weekend. If you have any questions about either of these special Longstreet Society events, please do not hesitate to contact me. Best wishes always and hope to see you this fall!
